Birth registration
There is no obligation for the birth of a British national to be recorded in this way. However there are the advantages that a British form of birth certificate is then available and that a record of the birth is afterwards held at the General Register Office in the United Kingdom.
If you wish to apply for this service, you will have to complete the application form.
Before registering the birth we need to see evidence of the national status of the person whose birth is to be registered. Photocopies of documents are not acceptable but original documents will be returned to you as soon as possible.
We need to see:
• The child’s full overseas birth certificate naming both of the parents
• The father’s long birth certificate (naming parents) or, if born outside the United Kingdom, documentary evidence of his claim to British nationality, eg naturalisation or registration certificate
• The mother’s (if British) long birth certificate (naming parents) or, if born outside the United Kingdom, documentary evidence of her claim to British nationality
• The parents’ marriage certificate and, if appropriate, evidence of the termination of any previous marriage of either parent
• Mother’s / father’s British passport
• If the mother/father is Ukrainian: Ukrainian international passport
The fee for registration is ?92, payable in local currency. Copies of the entry can be obtained at a further cost of ?59 per certificate.

The CNI can be obtained both in the UK from your local registrar’s office or here at the Embassy.

For information
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko signed a new Law, which has been passed by the Parliament on 22 December 2006, amending Family and Civil Codes of Ukraine. The new Law introduces a requirement for those who are going to get married to inform each other of their state of health. The State is obliged to provide adequate conditions for the appropriate medical examination.
There have been reports in the press suggesting that this medical examination is obligatory and couples would therefore not be able to get married without passing medical tests.
The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine has, however, published an explanatory note on 19 January 2007, stating that medical examination will be done on a voluntary basis only. The Marriage Office must inform the couple that they can take medical tests if they wish to do so. If the couple does not want to take the tests it will NOT be an obstacle for the registration of the marriage. They can "inform" each other about the state of their health without taking medical tests.
